What is mercerised cotton and what are its properties?
Before we start talking about our collection, it is important that you know a little more about mercerised cotton. John Mercer, in 1844, created a process by which the quality of cotton (and other fibres) could be improved. This process consists of immersing the prepared cotton threads in a caustic solution, usually sodium hydroxide. The fibres swell, become more resistant and absorb liquids (such as dye) better. However, not all fibres are suitable for this process. Usually, only those cotton fibres that are longer (such as Egyptian cotton) are mercerised.
Once the cotton has gone through the combing process, has been converted into yarn and mercerised, it can be considered as “yarn of Scotland”. And, What makes this quality cotton better than other materials, especially for summer pyjamas? As well as being softer and more resistant, the mercerising process offers a silky feel, brighter colours (as it absorbs the dye better) and promotes breathability and freshness.
